Data Report organization

The initial submission should be a PDF, which includes manuscript, figures, and tables in a single file.

For the final submission, send the text, tables, and figures as separate files. The figures should be provided as high-resolution versions in native applications.

Abstract: Include an abstract of <250 words that objectively conveys the main point of the data report. The abstract cannot contain callouts to figures, tables, text, or references and should be understandable without reading the entire manuscript. "International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP)" must be included in the abstract.

Introduction: Include a clear, succinct statement of the purpose and objectives of the research. The Introduction should not review the subject extensively or contain data results.

Materials and/or Methods: Include a brief description of analytical methods or reference to methods if published elsewhere. Include place of study, sample size, sampling technique, analytical technique, and data inclusion/exclusion criteria.

Results: Summarize results in text with reference to tables and/or figures. Supplementary data or materials and technical details can be referenced and included in Supplementary Material associated with the manuscript.

Acknowledgments: Acknowledge receipt of samples and/or data from IODP and the funding agency that supported the research (include grant or award number, if applicable). Contributors who are not authors can be acknowledged, such as technical help or other persons who contributed materially but are not included in the authorship.

References: Submit a reference for every citation in the text, tables, and figures and ensure reference information is complete and current at the time of initial submission. Organize references in alphabetical order by first author's last name. If the reference has a DOI or URL, please include it.

Tables: Number tables consecutively in the order of their first mention in text. Final table submissions should be in Microsoft Word, Excel, or CSV/TXT. Each table should contain a short caption and notes that define any abbreviations included in the table.

Figures: Number figures consecutively in the order of their first mention in text. Each figure should contain an explanatory caption that defines any abbreviations used on the figure.

Appendix/Supplementary material: Supporting data or other supplementary material may accompany data reports. Data sets that can be presented in CSV should be included as tables in the Data Report. If the data are provided in proprietary file formats or linked Excel workbooks, the information will be included in Supplementary material. These materials are author prepared and should be accompanied by a readme.txt file that describes the contents of the supplementary material and defines the file types.

Using AI tools such as ChatGPT: As a member of COPE, we follow the COPE Authorship and AI tools position statement (https://publicationethics.org/cope-position-statements/ai-author): AI tools cannot be listed as an author of a paper, and authors who use AI tools in writing a manuscript, making figures, or collecting data must clearly disclose how the AI tool was used and which tool was used.

Figure information

Copyrighted material: Figures or graphics used from another author or copyright holder must have copyright permission for inclusion in a manuscript. This includes figures redrawn but basically unaltered or only slightly altered. Permission is not needed for material that originated in a DSDP, ODP, or IODP publication or the public domain. Permission must allow distribution of the material in an open access publication on the web in current and future formats.

  1. All figures must be editable. Acceptable file formats: .eps, .pdf, .ai, .cdr, Kaleidagraph.

  2. If you are working in CorelDraw, Kaleidagraph, or a Microsoft software, please provide the native files in addition to an editable PDF. The PDF is the reference that will be used if there is a discrepancy between the PDF version and the native file (ex: symbols drop out).

  3. For PDFs saved from PowerPoint or Excel, please use the “Press Quality” settings.

  4. Photographs should be minimum 300 dpi for publication, preferably higher. Be sure to embed your photographs in the files.

  5. Make sure the filename appears within the figures, typically at the bottom of a figure.

  6. Make sure the filenames for all electronic files match the callouts in the text.

  7. If you have special instructions regarding a figure, please add it as a text item on the figure under the figure name.

Data Report

Data Reports are included as chapters in the Expedition Research Results section of the Proceedings of the International Ocean Discovery Program volume for a specified expedition. Data reports present shore-based analyses of samples from cores collected during or after the expedition and generally contain tabular data set(s) and supporting graphics but do not contain interpretation of results. Data reports can be submitted up to 30 months post-moratorium and are published within 2–3 months after acceptance.

Synthesis manuscripts are included as chapters in the Synthesis section of the Proceedings of the International Ocean Discovery Program volume for a specified expedition. Synthesis manuscripts combine expedition research results from several sources into a single manuscript. Syntheses can represent a single research topic or can encompass a larger subset or all of an expedition’s research results.

IODP publications are Gold Open Access; therefore, data and information from Data Reports and Syntheses can be reproduced, shared, and reused for any purpose.
